Fontanafredda
The Fontanafredda estate was bought by Vittorio Emanuele II as a gift to his mistress Rosa Vercellana in 1858. Later, it was handed down to their children, Maria Vittoria and Emanuele Alberto, Count of Mirafiori and Fontanafredda.
Their wines reflect the true tradition of the Langhe: the objective is to preserve the distinctive and typical characteristics of the grapes they are made from. Fontanafredda produces 8,500,000 bottles of wine each year making it one of the biggest private producers of Barolo: with 780,000 bottles each year, about 6% of the entire production. In 2017 Fontanafredda was voted “European Winery of the Year” by the prestigious American magazine Wine Enthusiast.
In terms of color, this wine is ruby-red when young, tending to garnet with time. On the nose, intense, characteristically flowery and fruity bouquet. A full persistent taste which is nicely dry and velvety. Very enjoyable one-two years after the harvest, its character and personality rounds off by further ageing in the bottle. Ideal with rich flavorsome first courses, meats and cheeses.
The results of lengthy ageing, above-all on account of their natural qualities, these robust, well-bodied wines are packed with structure and are well capable of withstanding the test of time. Barolo has an attractive ruby-red colour with garnet highlights which become orange with the passing of time. Its bouquet is clean, full and intense, with the wine’s typical traces of withered flowers, dry leaves and underbrush.
Opens with aromas of black cherry, rose petal and graphite. The bright accessible palate delivers ripe raspberry, white pepper and a hint of licorice alongside firm but refined tannins.
Ruby red wine with purple highlights. The nose is packed with black fruits especially blackberries and plums with slight spicy overtones with black pepper and cinnamon. Sweet soft tannins come together while a crisp freshness provides a long tasty finish.
FONTANAFREDDA Barbera Bricontondo
This shows plum compote, blackberry essence and vanilla. Yet, the oak doesn’t get in the way on the palate, which is fresh and lithe. Soft and velvety yet bright and agile.
This is a bright straw-yellow wine with greenish highlights. It has a full, delicate, elegant bouquet which brings flowers and fresh fruit to mind – mostly lemons, lilies of the valley and green apples. Its palate is attractively young, dry, fresh and well-balanced.
FONTANAFREDDA Raimonda Barbera d’Alba
Deep garnet in colour with a subtle nose of red berry fruit. Soft and elegant on the palate with fine ripe tannin and a complex finish.
